Swimming With The Fishes....

OMG!!! I did it, I did it, I did did did it! I bloody well snorkelled out of my depth without turning into a jelly fish.

As the boat which had just deposited us in the middle of the sea sped off, I realised that I was torn between two equally compelling forces: the desire to scream and panic and thrash about wildly, and the compulsion to respond to the archaic internal narrative which was telling me not to make a fuss and draw attention to myself (or, indeed, spoil things for the lovely Polish-American couple who were with us.) The internal voice won over, and I just got on with it in British-stiff-upper-lip manner.

And actually, it was fab! I saw spotted fish, stripy fish, pink and green fish, pink and purple fish, fish with long fins, a fish wearing lipstick, blue starfish, lovely coral and a brown ugly sludgy thingy that was apparently a moray eel. I think all the rest of them had names too, but I was far too elated when I got back on the boat to look in the book.

I really hope I shan't have to change my mind about CBT.

You are brave. It is a scary thing, being surrounded by fish. Jolly well done (to be said in best stiff upper lip voice.)

Sounds great, hope you're having a really good time. This post is quite a contrast to caroline's recent post about fish, worth checking out :)

I so hope that you didn't touch any of them ... although I think I might be ok with fish touching under/in water.

I so need you Ms M.
Hurry back and give me therapy. Please. I will email.

I am most impressed. Well done. I dont like water when it goes that dark colour either, the colour that means - DEEP. Dont ever watch that film... Deep Water I think its called. I had nightmares for weeks.

And, in case you hadn't noticed, I'm watching. You.

Hey guys, thank you so much for your lovely words of support. Ms Pants, of course I haven't seen that bloody film!!! Do you think I am completely insane??

Just going to check your blog now, lovely Caroline, although at the ridiculous price this hotel is charging for an internet connection I shall have to take out a second mortgage to check out everybody's blogs while I am here....

Hope y'all having fun out there...x

didn't you find it relaxing, being in the sea? You know, the whole, 'at one with nature' idea? Even if the sea is so obviously way stronger than any mere human...

And congratulations :) I'm not scared of them, but am envious of anyone who's near the sea whilst I'm not. Nicely jealous is a beter way of putting it!

Oh I am so glad I'm not the only one who's gone through that experience! But isn't it just great when you get past the fear!?!

Fish wearing lipstick, eh? They have such sophisticated fish in Thailand. I've seen a hermit crab in a shell suit ... ha ha.

Misssy M said...

I did that for the first time in Thailand too- it's so great but so absolutely terrifying.

My brother is a keen diver and Oz is his destination of choice. He has seen 15 ft manta rays and sharks up close. Personally I don't think I could handle that. Give me little fishes with pink lipstick instead!

Hiya Ms M,

Did you notice how fish have personalities? That's the observation I made when I first dived on the Barrier Reef. There's the pesky, curious, nosy fish, the shy, sensitive ones, the funny one, the bolshy ones etc. It's an amazing world down there and it is a great thing to get over the fear part and have a look!

All the best, Austin.
